Home > Review of Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Downtown Las Vegas
On a girls weekend a couple of weeks ago myself and a few friends stayed at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Downtown. We were on a bit of a budget and as we're regulars to Vegas, this seemed like the perfect option at only $70 for a 'king size' room each night.
We booked online which was pretty simple and a couple of days later we received a phone call where we were offered an upgrade. After reading several reviews we decided that it wouldn't be worth it as we wouldn't be spending a lot of time in the hotel over the course of the weekend.
We arrived a little bit earlier than we were due to check in so the attendants behind the desk offered to hold our luggage while our rooms were prepared. Luckily we didn't go far as they were kind enough to give us a call letting us know they had finished early and we'd be able to take our bags up earlier than planned.
Our rooms were all 'Carson Tower King Sized' rooms and they were a lot nicer than we had all been expecting. It was spacious, modern (for Downtown especially) and extremely clean and well looked after. Apparently the bathrooms are smaller than they are in the upgraded rooms however for one person it was more than enough.
We knew we were going to be quite a distance from the strip. However, as we were quite a large group of girls it was quite easy to grab an Uber, so for us the location was not an issue. No taxis for us after years of being ripped off by the local cab drivers.
On the last day we were so tired of the strip that we decided to stay in the hotel and spend time in the casino and pool. The casino was great, although not a patch on those on the strip. The drinks were nowhere near as frequent during busy hours and it was difficult to get to any machines. It was more than made up for by the friendly staff though, as they often apologized for the food/drinks wait. The pool is apparently the best pool in Downtown Vegas and it was lovely to escape somewhere quiet after a packed trip.
Overall I would say you are definitely getting what you pay for - after all, the Golden Nugget is a budget hotel away from the main night life of Vegas. If you're looking for a cheaper way to visit LV then I would definitely recommend 'the nug' as we ended up calling it by the last day, especially if you don't plan on going to the strip every single day (there's more to Vegas than the strip).
