Review of MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip

MGM Grand Hotel and Casino ReviewThe largest hotel in Las Vegas is the MGM Grand with just over 5000 rooms as of late 2016. Indeed, on 18 December 1993, when it opened, it was the largest hotel in the world. The star of Hollywood movies and boxing bouts ever since, its large array of big time events, swimming pools, nightclubs and restaurants keep tourists flocking in from all over the world - and if like us, getting lost every single time they visit the MGM Grand, such is the sheer size of the place.

Visitors of MGM Grand would probably like Planet Hollywood, Mandalay Bay, Paris, Bally's, Flamingo, Mirage and Treasure Island.

The casino and gaming area is huge as you would expect from a one-time world's largest hotel and is still the largest casino in Vegas at 160,000+ square feet. So, it's big, and Americans like big - and from our experience, it is this fact that is the reason that so many people visit the MGM each year - but is being big good enough for you, our intrepid reader? Let's discuss...

Room-wise, we have stayed in various rooms at MGM Grand over the years, usually on the cheaper end and they have always been among the best - never THE best, but there or there about. We don't have the luxury of saying that we stayed in the larger suites or even one the exclusive MGM villas ($5000+ per night), but we wouldn't kick and scream if we were forced to stay there again.

If visitors are looking for the MGM lions, then, despite some very out of date content on the web, the lions no longer strut their stuff at the casino, but you can try feeding the concrete lions outside - their favorite food being cheesy puffs.

Food wise, MGM is the one of the better ones at the southern end of Las vegas Blvd with loads of higher end 'stuff' (Creftsteak, Joël Robuchon, Hakkasan, FiAMMA etc.) with plenty of the usual take out and family 'stuff' that makes you fat (Subway, cafes, buffet, the food court etc.).

MGM Grand's Joel Robuchon restaurant is featured in our 10 great Las Vegas hotel restaurants guide.

If you like electronic dance music (EDM) - and we do not (as we're older these days), then Hakkasan nightclub in the evenings is where you can hang out with the cool kids and Calvin Harris if you get lucky or Tiësto, Steve Aoki and Hardwell if you are less so. If EDM isn't for you then there are a few bars that we like - Centrifuge seems to be the one we always go back to. There's also Wet Republic, which is a pool party for the really cool kids.

How many rooms are in the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas? - just over 5000 (2016)

The MGM Grand is just so damn big to be enjoyable, which seems a very silly thing to say, we know, but that's how we feel about the place. There's no doubt that pretty much every entertainment venue, every restaurant, the gaming floor and the rooms are all great, but getting between them all is just a bit too confusing. But maybe that's us, and with the increasing amount of younger people that go to the hotel every time we go back, it perhaps fits their needs more than ours. Damn, this means I'm getting old and will end up playing video poker Downtown for the rest of my life!
